Cost Tracking: Getting Real ROI When Spend Lives Elsewhere

Revenue arrives by postback, spend sits in the ad platform. How to bring cost into your tracker, which cost model to use, and how to check it.

The cost gap

Your tracker knows every click and every conversion. It does not automatically know what you paid for them. Until cost is in the same place as revenue, ROI by placement or creative is a guess, and the biggest losers stay invisible because they look like they cost nothing.

Three ways to get cost in

1. Cost in the tracking link

Many traffic sources fill a cost or bid macro at click time. Pass it into the tracker's cost parameter and every click carries its own price. This is the most precise method when the source supports it.

2. A fixed cost per click or per mille

Set a CPC or CPM on the campaign. It works for sources with flat pricing and gives a good estimate where bids are stable.

3. Spend import

Enter or import the real spend per day, per campaign, from the ad platform and let the tracker spread it over the clicks of that day. It matches your invoice and corrects the drift of fixed estimates.

Combine them: use the macro or a fixed CPC for daily decisions, and import actual spend at the end of the day so the totals match the invoice.

CPC, CPM and CPA

ModelYou pay forHow the tracker should count it
CPCEach clickCost on every click
CPM1,000 impressionsCost spread over the clicks of the period
CPAEach conversionCost on each conversion, zero on clicks

Use the same currency for cost and revenue, or let the tracker convert both to one reporting currency. Mixed currencies are the most common reason ROI looks wrong by a fixed percentage.

Checking the numbers

  1. Compare the tracker's daily cost with the ad platform's spend for the same day and time zone.
  2. Expect small differences: filtered bot clicks, time zone edges, platform corrections. A gap above a few percent needs a reason.
  3. Check that cost is on every source. A source without cost data shows infinite ROI and attracts budget it does not deserve.
  4. After a bid change, check that the cost per click in the tracker followed.

Try it on your own traffic.
